My Teaching Style

Austin Guitar welcomes students of all ages and experience levels with personalized lessons targeting the limitless areas they are interested in. From my experience of teaching and receiving lessons for over 17 years, I have found that these three basic principles are essential to my method:
  • Building a Solid Foundation

A proper technique is often what makes the difference between a good musician and a musician who excels. While there are plenty of helpful resources to explain these various concepts, there is no replacement to working with an experienced teacher directly.

  • Practice Regularly

Learning an instrument is a lot of fun but, like learning any new skill, practice is important. I help students come up with an individual, manageable, and fun plan to encourage regular practice.

  • Focus on Having Fun

I have always enjoyed learning more under a fun teacher. Whether you are looking for a break from work or a creative outlet for you or your child, I will make learning the guitar a fun, relaxing and rewarding experience!

What Students Are Saying

“Tom has really helped me become more comfortable with the guitar, especially as someone who is an impatient learner. He’s able to take tough ideas and break them down into simpler concepts and is super patient with you along the way. Tom helps you learn guitar without it ever feeling like a chore and I would recommend him to everyone.”
— Ian
“I would highly recommend Tom as a guitar teacher. His teaching style is supportive and he has made learning my favorite songs fun. Tom has helped me improve over the last year and has encouraged me to learn my favorite songs using wahwah and distortion pedals and a loop station which has been fun. His interest and knowledge of guitar music motivates me to keep learning and makes weekly lessons enjoyable.”

— Matt
“Tom is an attentive and thoughtful teacher. His lessons are tailored to my specifics needs. I understand music theory more from his lessons than my college-level music courses. I strongly recommend Austin Guitar for all of your guitar and music needs!”
— Mackenzie
“During my time in his lessons I achieved a level of proficiency that I didn't think possible. We worked on getting fundamentals good and then moved on to my individual goal. As someone who wants to sing and play he was not only patient with me trying to get a grip on both but also encouraging throughout the whole process. I'd recommend him to anyone of any skill level as I've been taught by him and I've seen his performances live and he can play!”
